Technology Use in my Classroom- 1.16.18

To start off my classroom use of technology blog, I wanted to talk about all of the great educational tools offered by Google. I'm sure just about everyone has heard of the many Google Apps for Education (or G Suite). These are tools I use every. single. day.

My students access our Google Classroom page multiple times throughout the week to complete assignments or to announcements. I send out a daily homework e-mail to parents and students with the link to a Google Sites page where all 7th grade teachers update homework for their class. Every Friday my science classes take a flashback quiz on Google Forms. Google Forms is one of my favorite resources. I create the quiz, add it to Classroom, and schedule the assignment to post at the beginning of each class. I can pull up my Google Classroom account and see which students still have not submitted their quiz. If a student is absent, they can access the quiz from home. I will often make the quiz multiple choice so students are able to receive immediate feedback on their performance. I can also get a quick item analysis over my student's performance- either based on individual students or my all of my classes.

My accelerated science class has been busy preparing for the district science fair. Our 6 day weekend has interfered with deadlines and I was stumped as what to do since I had planned to practice judges questions in class on Friday. To solve this dilemma, I sent out an announcement to parents and students with 3 possible (and optional) Google Hangout times and thanks to this technology, I was able to practice with my students and help prepare them for the upcoming science fair. I have used Hangouts before for grad school, but never in my own classroom. It proved to be a beneficial (and very much appreciated) resource.

  1. I just used a Google Form for my school's "Distance Learning" snow day. This is something that I plan to use more often, too!

    1. My district does not offer the Non-Traditional Instructional days, but I would absolutely love it if they did! Parents and students were both very appreciative for the extra help.

  2. I love the idea of everything Google has to offer for a classroom teacher. However, we are not a 1-1 school. Could you see the Google Suite being effective in a classroom with mixed technology for about half of it students?

On my list of things to-do is Google Training. I hope I can get that accomplished soon to help support implementation within my classroom.
