Richard Byrne: Free Tech 4 Teachers- 3.28.18

I enjoy almost everything Richard Byrne highlights on his blog, but I get extremely excited when he posts something that is related to science, especially if I can use it in my 7th grade classroom. This week, he posted “Seven Good Resources to Help Students Learn the Periodic Table”. In 7th grade, we have one unit that focuses on chemical reactions and knowledge of the periodic table of the elements in essential in order to be successful. I’m sure my kiddos would have appreciated this resource back in November :)

Below is a short description of a few of the resources I found most beneficial and engaging for middle schoolers.

Ptable-- this is an interactive display of the Periodic Table. When the user clicks on an element, a Wikipedia article opens up all about that element. https://ptable.com/

The Periodic Table of Elements, in Pictures & Words-- this resource focuses on how each element relates to products that students may be familiar with. When the user clicks on an element, a description of the element appears and it relates the elements to something that the student can familiarize with. http://elements.wlonk.com/ElementsTable.htm

The Periodic Table of Comic Books-- this is a resource that I have used before. It was developed by the chemistry department at UK. Every element has a comic book reference (which my 7th grade boys LOVE). http://www.uky.edu/Projects/Chemcomics/index.html

ABPI Schools has developed a game where students must place the elements in the correct placement on a blank table. I have also used this one in class and it has been the most popular with my students. I use it at the end of the unit during our test review and the winner receives some bonus points for their test. https://www.abpischools.org.uk/topic/periodic-table/2

  1. Your students are so fortunate to have a teacher willing to seek out high interest ways to present and test materials! I often wish these resources were available when I was a student.
